Exploring the San Antonio Missions

Exploring the San Antonio Missions

For Mother’s Day, we went to San Antonio and explored the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. I got a stamp in my National Parks Passport book and we enjoyed seeing the history.

Before we went to the National Historic Park, we went downtown to see the Alamo. It is a state park and not dog friendly. It was a bummer because we paid $20 for parking. We got as close as we could to the Alamo for a picture though.

Before we headed back to the car, we stopped at Jimmy Johns and picked up sandwiches. Then we went down to the Riverwalk and found a place off the sidewalk to eat. The Riverwalk was pretty busy, so Kat had to stay on alert for passers by.

As usual, Gus was more interested in trying to charm us into sharing our sandwiches.

Next we headed to the first mission on the Mission Trail, Mission Concepcion. All of the National Monument missions were very dog friendly so we could walk all around the grounds.

Next up was Mission San Jose. It is the largest mission. The park rangers were very nice there and even gave Kat and Gus some fresh water.

While we walked around Mission San Jose, Kat found the remains of what we think were ovens. She thought they looked like igloos and would make a good doggie den.

David, Kat, and Gus posed in front of the church.

The third mission we visited was Mission San Juan. Both pups enjoyed this mission because some feral cats live there and Kat and Gus snacked on some poop. So gross.

Our final stop was Mission Espada. Kat was pretty glad this was the final stop because it was starting to get hot and her heat tolerance is fairly low these days.

I thought the chapel at Mission Espada was pretty because it has the bells.

It was a good outing. If we had gone without dogs, it would have been easy to ride bikes between each mission. Especially between Mission San Jose and Mission San Juan, it would be a pretty bike ride along the river. However, even with dogs, it was a good time. I appreciate everything being so dog friendly!
